Topopolis

Infinite land with boundaries

– Heavens River

A topopolis is a hollow, strand like structure built out of hundreds or thousands of segments. Because of it’s extreme length of trillions of meters, a meter of curve is stretched across kilometers of structure. it can be looped and twisted into a number of configurations. D. Taylor’s book Heaven’s River best describes a theoretical Topopolis.

A non rotating shell surrounds the main cylinder, this is constructed a dense layer of metals and meteor absorbing materials. Magnetic bearings separate the outer and inner shell. The inner shell rotates to provide 1G of gravity for the inhabitants. Spin transfer systems transports loads between the inner and outer shell for regularly spaced docks around the length. A topopolis can not maintain a stable orbit. Trajectories of the segments & total strands must be maintained to stay inside

Retractable barriers at the end of each segment allow for segments to be added & removed without disruption to the ring. Mountains or higher terrain will assist with hiding these barriers. Terrain is built into the structure, with a few dozen meters of bedrock & soil on the surface. Manufacturing, infrastructure, & maintenance is hidden beneath the terrain.
